Breast Ultrasound
Breast Ultrasound
Breast ultrasounds can be performed in conjunction with a diagnostic mammogram or separately. It is important to note that, in some cases, it is not possible to tell from the imaging studies alone whether a growth is benign or cancerous.
Ultrasound imaging, otherwise known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain images from inside the human body. These reflected sound wave “echoes” are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image.
What to expect
During a breast ultrasound, the technologist will apply a gel directly to your skin to ensure high-quality images. Then, we will use a hand-held wand to scan over and around your body. Ultrasound images are produced from the reflection of sound waves, so you will not experience any discomfort or be exposed to any level of radiation during this procedure.
