Navigating X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Procedures at Great Lakes Medical Imaging
X-ray imaging stands as a cornerstone of modern medicine, offering a non-invasive glimpse into the human body's inner workings. At Great Lakes Medical Imaging (GLMI), we utilize this essential diagnostic tool to aid in early disease detection, reduce the necessity for exploratory surgeries, and enhance the precision of surgical interventions when necessary. Our state-of-the-art technology ensures high-quality images with minimal radiation exposure, promoting patient safety and superior diagnostic accuracy.
The Critical Role of X-Ray Imaging
When it comes to diagnosing and treating medical conditions, early detection can make all the difference. X-ray images play a pivotal role in uncovering hidden ailments at their onset, allowing for timely and effective treatment. By capturing shadows and reflections on photographic or digital plates with a small dose of radiation, X-ray technology provides our physicians with a clear window into your health.
What to Expect During an X-Ray
During an X-ray procedure at GLMI, you may be required to hold your breath or remain perfectly still to achieve the clearest image possible. In certain cases, a contrast agent might be necessary to enhance the images, which would involve drinking a specialized solution. After the initial X-rays are taken, our team will review them and, if needed, may take additional images to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.
For your comfort and the procedure's success, we ask that you avoid wearing clothing or jewelry that contains metal as these can interfere with the imaging process.
Expanding Our Services with Fluoroscopy
GLMI is excited to announce the addition of the Siemens Luminos Agile fluoroscopy machine at our Park Club Lane location in Williamsville. This machine is particularly beneficial for bariatric patients or those with limited mobility, featuring an adjustable height table and an open design for easier access. Its advanced capabilities allow for extensive imaging coverage in a single session, elevating the patient experience and enhancing diagnostic precision.
Understanding Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is an advanced imaging technique that captures real-time, moving images of your internal structures. Unlike traditional X-rays, fluoroscopy takes a continuous series of images at a rapid pace, displaying them on a monitor for immediate review. This method is invaluable for a range of diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Your Fluoroscopy Experience
When undergoing fluoroscopy at GLMI:
- Expect to drink varying thicknesses of a radiopaque solution that aids in imaging contrast.
- You will lie on a scanning table, while a special camera moves over you, capturing detailed images without making direct contact.
- Staying still is crucial for acquiring clear, usable images.
- You may need to hold your breath momentarily during the scan.
- Communication with the technologist will be maintained throughout your procedure.
Patients scheduled for upper GI, esophagrams, or small bowel follow-through should refrain from eating or drinking at least eight hours prior to the exam to ensure optimal results.
Preparing for Your Procedure
To ensure a smooth process, we have outlined some dos and don'ts for your upcoming visit:
- Review the general instructions on our homepage.
- Wear easily removable clothing as you may need to change into a gown.
- Notify our staff if you have any conditions such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if specific movements cause discomfort.
- Empty your bladder before the exam unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
- Bring previous exam films and reports for reference.
Please avoid wearing any jewelry or removable dental work and refrain from blood-thinning medications for certain procedures as directed.
