What to Expect Before, During, and After Your MRI Exam in Buffalo, NY

Published January 4th, 2025 by Great Lakes Medical Imaging

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive, highly detailed imaging technique that provides critical insights into the body’s internal structures. If you’ve been scheduled for your first MRI exam in Buffalo, NY, you may have questions about what to expect and how to prepare. Understanding the process beforehand can help ease any anxiety and ensure that your appointment goes smoothly.

At Great Lakes Medical Imaging (GLMI), we specialize in providing high-quality MRI services to residents of Buffalo and Western NY. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to prepare for your first MRI exam, so you know exactly what to expect and can feel confident and comfortable during the procedure.

What Is an MRI?

How MRI Works

MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures, including the brain, spine, muscles, joints, and organs. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI doesn’t use ionizing radiation, making it a safe and effective imaging option for diagnosing a variety of conditions, from brain tumors and spinal injuries to joint and soft tissue problems.

Why You May Need an MRI

Your doctor may recommend an MRI to help diagnose:

  • Neurological conditions (e.g., brain tumors, multiple sclerosis)
  • Musculoskeletal injuries (e.g., torn ligaments, herniated discs)
  • Joint problems (e.g., arthritis, rotator cuff tears)
  • Abnormalities in internal organs (e.g., liver disease, kidney problems)

An MRI provides highly detailed images, which can offer invaluable information that guides your treatment plan.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Your MRI Exam

1. Before Your MRI Exam

Schedule Your Appointment

When you schedule your MRI exam at GLMI, you’ll receive detailed instructions on how to prepare. It's important to share any relevant medical history with your healthcare provider, including information about allergies, implants, or metal devices in your body (e.g., pacemakers, artificial joints, or stents). Some implants can interfere with the MRI, so it's important to be upfront about any medical devices.

Clothing and Personal Items

Since the MRI machine uses powerful magnets, you’ll need to remove any items containing metal. These may include:

  • Jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces)
  • Hairpins or clips
  • Watches or piercings
  • Credit cards (the magnets can erase the magnetic strip)
  • Clothing with metal fasteners (zippers, buttons, etc.)

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing without metal, or you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Be sure to leave any unnecessary valuables at home, as you’ll be asked to store them in a locker during your MRI.

Inform the Technologist About Any Concerns

If you have any concerns about the MRI process, such as claustrophobia or anxiety, inform the technologist beforehand. We strive to make our patients as comfortable as possible, and we can discuss options for making the procedure more manageable, including using open MRI machines for a less enclosed experience.

2. During Your MRI Exam

Entering the MRI Machine

When it’s time for your MRI, the technologist will guide you to the exam room and position you on the MRI table. The type of MRI you are having will determine how long the procedure lasts, but it typically takes between 20 and 60 minutes. Depending on the area being imaged, you may be asked to lie on your back, side, or stomach.

Staying Still During the Scan

During the scan, it’s essential to remain as still as possible to ensure clear, accurate images. The MRI machine will make loud knocking or tapping noises, which can be startling but are perfectly normal. We will provide you with earplugs or headphones to help reduce the noise.

For some types of MRI scans, you may need to hold your breath for short periods, especially if the area being imaged is the chest or abdomen. Your technologist will guide you through the process and let you know when to hold your breath or when to relax.

Contrast Dye (If Needed)

In some cases, the MRI procedure may involve the use of a contrast dye, injected into a vein to enhance the clarity of the images. The technologist will place an intravenous (IV) line in your arm if contrast is required. The injection is usually quick, and you may feel a slight cold sensation as the contrast enters your bloodstream.

3. After Your MRI Exam

Recovery and Results

Once the MRI is complete, you will be free to resume your normal activities. There are no special recovery instructions unless contrast dye was used; in that case, we recommend drinking plenty of fluids to help flush it from your system.

The radiologist will review the images and interpret the results, which will then be sent to your referring physician. Depending on the findings, your doctor will discuss the results with you and recommend the next steps in your treatment plan.

Special Considerations for MRI Exams

Claustrophobia and Anxiety

If you feel claustrophobic or anxious about being in the MRI machine, talk to the technologist before the exam. At GLMI, we offer open MRI options, which are more spacious and less enclosed than traditional MRI machines. If necessary, we can discuss additional options, such as mild sedation, to help ease anxiety during the procedure.

Metal Implants and Medical Devices

If you have any metal implants or medical devices, it’s important to inform the radiologist and technologist beforehand. Some metal implants, such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, or certain types of joint replacements, may not be compatible with MRI machines. Your doctor will discuss alternative imaging options if necessary.
